Bill?
A bill is a written idea for a law
Hopper
The hopper is a wooden box where the idea/bill is placed
Private Bill
Deal with individual people or places
Ex. Woman gets immigration requirements waived for husband
Public Bill
Apply to the entire nation
Ex. No smoking in restaurants
Authorization bill
Any thing to do with policy
Appropriations bill
Where money is spent (only the HoR can initiate a appropriations bill)
Filibuster
Any congressman can propose an amendment during this stage
- sometimes done simply to slow the process or kill the debate
- Need a majority vote to add an amendment
Veto
Bill goes back to congress, refuses/problem
Pocket veto
president does not act on the bill within 10 days
What is the electoral college
The electoral college is a group of people that elects the president and the vice president.
What is a presidential primary
The primaries decide who will represent their party during the election
ADVANTAGE of presidential primary
Voters get to learn more about the indivuals
DISADVANTAGE of primaru
Voter turnout is low
Gerrymandering rules
- Districts must have equal population
- No minority may be excluded from voting
- Districts must be contiguous and compact
Two types of gerrymandering
Partisan, racial(violates Voting Rights Act)
