Why use citations?
A
- Acknowledge other scholars’ ideas
- Show lineage of your own ideas
- Tell readers where to go for more information

What should be included in a citation?
A
- Author
- Title of book or article
- Title of containing journal (for article)
- Publication

Footnotes vs. Bibliographies
A
- A footnote is a single sentence. In a footnote, all elements of citation are separated by commas.
- A bibliographic entry contains multiple sentences. Most elements are separated by periods.

What needs to be cited?
A
- Any idea you borrow from another scholar
- General information such as birth and death dates and other biographical information does not need to be cited (if you could find it on Wikipedia, you probably don’t need to cite it)
- Try to go to the original source
