What is hematemesis?
Vomiting of blood or coffe-ground like material
What is melena?
Think melanin (black pigment)
Melena is black, tarry stools
90% are due to upper GI bleeds
What is Hematochezia?
Red or maroon blood in stool
Usually due to lower GI bleed
Can be due to MASSIVE upper GI bleed
What is schatzkis ring?
Ring obstruction in esophagus
What is Chaga’s disease?
Secondary achalasia (impaired relaxation of Lower esophageal sphincter)
Caused by a parasite
What is Auerbach’s plexus?
Also known as the myenteric plexus
It is the plexus of nerves found throughout the GI tract in the muscularis propria between the inner circular muscle layer and the outer longitudinal muscle layer
What is meisner’s plexus?
Also known as the submucosal plexus
It is the plexus of nerves found throughout the GI tract in the submucosal layer
