Circulatory systems Flashcards
What do circulatory systems carry around the body?
Oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, waste products, and hormones
What features do circulatory systems have in common?
- Liquid transport medium
- Vessels (tubes) to carry the medium
- Pumping mechanism
What are the 2 different types of transport systems?
Open circulatory system, closed circulatory system
What happens in the open circulatory system?
Simplest type - Heart pumps fluid around body into vessels, then they push it into body
Vessels dont meet each other again
Give examples of animals who have open circulatory systems:
Insects, vertebrates
What happens in closed circulatory systems?
More sophisticated - Blood vessels are all continuous + they form a loop
No fluid is ever free in the body bc its in this loop
Give an example of an animal that has a closed circulatory system:
Humans
What happens in a single closed circulatory system?
Blood only goes through heart once before its completed a full cycle
E.g. Fish
What happens in a double closed circulatory system?
Blood goes through heart twice before it has completed a full cycle
E.g. Humans
