Blood Flashcards
1
Q
What does the blood carry?
A
- Red blood cells (erythrocytes)
- White blood cells (leucocytes)
- Platelets (thrombocytes)
- Plasma
2
Q
Describe red blood cells:
A
- Biconcave shape, no organelles, lots of haemoglobin
- Gives blood red appearance
- Carries O2 around body
3
Q
Describe white blood cells:
A
- All involved in immune system + defending against infections
- Many different types, structures, + functions
4
Q
Describe platelets:
A
- Fragments of large cells in bone marrow called megakaryocytes
- Dont contain nucelus
- Involved in blood clotting
5
Q
Describe plasma:
A
- Transports dissolved glucose, amino acids, mineral ions, hormones, + large plasma proteins
- Yellow liquid that carries cells
- Makes up 55% of vol of blood
6
Q
What are some examples of cells that plasma carries?
A
- Albumin = Maintains osmotic pressure
- Fibrinogen = Blood clotting
- Globulins = Important in transport + immune system
7
Q
What is the function of blood?
A
Mainly to transport many substances around the body
8
Q
What are examples of things blood transports around the body?
A
- O2 to, and CO2 from, respiring cells
- Digested food from small intestine
- Nitrogenous waste products from cells to excretory organs
- Chemical messages (hormones)
- Food molecules from storage compounds to cells needing them
- Platelets to damaged areas
- Cells + antibodies involved in immune response
9
Q
What does blood also contribute to the maintenance of?
A
Steady body temp + acts as a buffer, minimising changes in pH
