Circulatory System & Heart Flashcards
Red blood cell
RED VELVET DONUT
- carry oxygen, nutrients and other materials to and from tissues
- contain a protein called haemoglobin; normally 4 irons and 4HG/Fe
White blood cell
PACMAN
- defend the body against bacteria, disease craving organisms and other invaders
- antibody makers
Platelet
HEALERS
- formation of blood clots/scabs
- prevent excess bleeding; patch up wounds
Plasma
CYTOPLASM OF BLOOD
- liquid portion of blood
- helps carry the blood cells along
Blood pressure
- pressure of blood pushing against the walls of arteries
Artery
OXYGEN-RICH
- carry oxygen-rich blood AWAY from the heart to the body tissues
- thick-walled vessels (withstands pressure)
Vein
OXYGEN-POOR
- carry oxygen-poor blood from the body tissues BACK TO the heart
- have valves to prevent backflow
- thinner-walled vessels
Capillary vein
SMALLEST VESSEL
- 1 cell thick
- thin walls
- gases, nutrients, and waste pass through easily during DIFFUSION
Vena cava
- large veins that bring blood to the heart
SUPERIOR - head and arms
INFERIOR - abdomen and legs
Right atrium
DEOXYGENATED
- receives oxygen-poor blood from body
- pumps it to the right ventricle
Left atrium
OXYGENATED
- receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs
- pumps it to the left ventricle
Right ventricle
DEOXYGENATED
- pumps oxygen-poor blood to lungs
Left ventricle
OXYGENATED
- pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body
Pulmonary artery
DEOXYGENATED
- carries oxygen-poor blood to the lungs
Pulmonary vein
OXYGENATED
- carries oxygen-rich blood from lungs back to the heart
