Circulatory System and Blood Flow Flashcards
Single circulatory system
Blood passes through the heart once per complete circuit of the body
Double Circulatory System
Blood passes through the heart twice per complete circuit of the body—once to the lungs and once to the rest of the body
Diffusion Gradient
The difference in concentration of a substance between two areas, driving diffusion from a high to a low concentration.
Surface Area: Volume Ratio
The ratio comparing the total surface area of an organism to its volume, affecting the efficiency of diffusion and transport.
Deoxygenated Blood
Blood that has low oxygen content and high carbon dioxide levels, returning to the heart from the body
Oxygenated Blood
Blood that has high oxygen content, having been oxygenated in the lungs before being pumped to the body.
