Circulatory System Flashcards
What does plasma do in our blood ?
Plasma is the liquid part of our blood, its main job is transportation
What four components make up our blood ?
Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
Where are red blood cells made ?
Red blood cells are made in the bone marrow
Circulation system
Blood, arteries, veins, capillaries, heart
Blood
Watery plasma, red bloods cells, white blood cells, platelets
Red blood cells
Contain haemoglobin to carry oxygen
White blood cells
Protect the body, make antibodies
Platelets
Clot blood
Functions of blood
Transport (RBC carry oxygen) and protection (WBC fight infection)
Arteries
Thick walls, narrow lumen, no valves, carry blood away from the heart
Veins
Thin walls, wide lumen, valves, carry blood to the heart
Capillaries
Link arteries and veins, walls are one cell thick, allows for passage of materials
Cardiac muscle
Muscle in the heart, it never tires
Four chambers of the heart
Right and left atrium and right and left ventricles
Left ventricle
Thick wall because it pumps blood all around the body
