Circulatory System Flashcards
Top 2 chambers of heart
Right atrium and Left atrium
Bottom 2 chambers of heart
Right ventricle and Left ventricle
Veins/Arteries
Veins bring blood to the heart, Arteries take it away
Pulmonary vein
Delivers oxygenated blood to the left atrium
Why are the walls of the ventricle thicker than those of the atria?
They pump blood further and at a higher pressure
Walls of the left ventricle are …… than the right
Thicker

Heart attacks
Coronary arterys = blocked/obstruced
Factors increasing chance of coronary heart disease
- Smoking
- Stress
- High fat diet
- Hereditary
- Lack of exercise
- Diabetes
Coronary heart disease
Occurs when fatty deposits build up inside the coronary arteries, restricting blood flow and oxygen to the heart muscle, potentially leading to a heart attack.
How is heart rate increased?
- Adrenaline
- When we excericise, muscles produce carbon dioxide
- Receptors in Aorta and carotid artery detect this
- Electrical impulses sent to medulla
- Accelorator nerve increases heart rate
