Circulatory system Flashcards
What are the types of blood vessels?
Veins, capillaries, arteries
What does the circulatory system consist of?
Heart, blood, blood vessels
The circulatory system carries ____ all over your body
Blood
Give me three reasons why blood is important
- Carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells
- Keeps body safe by fighting off disease
- Helps body maintain a normal body temperature
How do the circulatory system and respiratory system work together?
As we inhale oxygen, the blood carries the oxygen to the cells in the body. The cells use oxygen and process nutrients, creating carbon dioxide. The blood carries the carbon dioxide to the lungs to exhale it.
How do the circulatory system and digestive system work together?
The circulatory and digestive systems work together by transporting nutrients absorbed from the digestive system into the bloodstream. The blood then carries these nutrients to cells throughout the body for energy.
What is homeostasis, and give me an example.
A state of balance
Ex: When you’re hot, your body sweats to cool you down. When you’re cold, your body shivers to warm you up.
What is the heart?
It is a muscle that is kept safe by the ribcage, and has four chambers
What are the four chambers of the heart? (it’s okay if you don’t know this)
Right Atrium: Receives blood without oxygen from the body.
Right Ventricle: Pumps that blood to the lungs to get oxygen.
Left Atrium: Receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs.
Left Ventricle: Pumps the oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body.
How does the heart work?
Gets messages from the body that tells it when to pump more or less blood depending on an individual’s needs.
What are blood vessels?
BLOOD VESSELS are the pathways that carry blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients while removing waste.
Tell me about the 3 types of blood vessels
Arteries: Carry blood away from the heart. They have thick muscular walls that contract to keep the blood moving
Capillaries (connected to the arteries): Help send blood around the body. Allow oxygen, nutrients, and waste to exchange with tissues.
Veins: Carry blood back to the heart. They are less muscular, but contain valves.
What is a valve?
Valve: a door in your body that opens and closes to keep things moving in the right direction. In the heart and veins, they make sure blood flows one way, and doesn’t go backwards
What is the purpose of the capillaries?
They allow NUTRIENTS and OXYGEN to be delivered to the cells. Also, waste products like CO2 are removed by the capillaries.
What are the two types of blood carried by the circulatory system?
Oxygen Rich
Oxygen Poor
