Circulatory System Flashcards
What are the functions of the Circulatory System?
Transportation
Temprature Regualtion
Protection
What makes up blood?
Plasma
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
Plasma
Transports:
Nutrients
Waste
Carbon Dioxide
Heat
And produced blood-clotting protien.
Where are blood cells made?
In the bone marrow of long bones, e.g femur (thigh bone)
Red Blood Cells
Contains Haemoglobin
Transports oxygen
White Blood Cells
Defends the body
Produces antibodies to fight germs
Platelets
Clot the blood
What does haemoglobin do?
It allows red blood cells to bond to oxygen, can easily be broken to release oxygen.
Artery
Goes away from heart
Carries oxygenated blood
Thick elastic walls
Vein
Goes towards the heart
Carries carbon-dioxide
Thin, inelastic walls
Valves
Capppillary
Thin walls allow oxygen and nutrients to diffuse easily
What muscle is the heart made of?
The cardiac muscle
How does the heart get its blood supply?
Coronary arteries, it leaves through the coronary veins
The wall dividing the left and right sides of the heart
Septum
Which side of the heart pumps blood to the body and is thicker?
The left
Which side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs?
The right
What 2 chambers can be found on both sides of the heart?
Atrium
Ventricle
What seperates the chambers of the heart and what is it’s purpous?
Valves
To stop blood from traveling the wrong direction
Carries deoxygenated blood to the heart
Vena Cava
Carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs
Pulmonary Artery
Carries oxygenated blood to the body
Aorta
Carries oxygenated blood to the heart
Pulmonary Vein
