Circulatory System Flashcards
Aorta
Distribute blood around the body from the left ventricle
Ventricles
The lower chambers in the heart
Right ventricle distributes the deoxygenated blood to the lungs via the pulmonary artery
Left ventricle distributes the oxygenated blood to the rest of the body via the aorta
Atriums
Upper chambers of the heart
Right atrium distributes deoxygenated blood to the right ventricle
Left atrium distributes oxygenated blood to the left ventricle
Three types of blood vessels
- Veins
- Arteries
- Capillaries
Arteries
Carry oxygenated blood around the body
Very thick
Veins
Carries deoxygenated blood from the muscles to the heart
Thicker than capillaries but thinner than arteries
Capillaries
Wraps around alveoli and allows for gas exchange to happen
Pulmonary Artery
Carries blood from the right ventricle to the lungs for gas exchange
Pulmonary Veins
Brings newly oxygenated blood from the lungs into the left atrium
Superior and Inferior Vena Cava
Carries deoxygenated blood from the rest of the body into the heart (specifically right atrium)
4 types of valves
- Tricuspid
- Mitral
- Aortic
- Pulmonary
Valves
Prevent back flow of blood in your heart
Prevent heart attack
