circulatory system Flashcards
What is the circulatory system
The system that contains the heart and the blood vessels and moves blood throughout the body.
What is the circulatory system made up of
Blood
Blood Vessels
Systematic circulation
Pulmonary circulation
Heart
What is systematic circulation
The circulation that carries oxygenated blood & nutrients around the body
It also returns the waste products that have to be removed from the body
What is pulmonary circulation
The circulation that carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs
It exchanges oxygen & carbon dioxide
It also carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
Describe the structure of the heart
The heart is divided from left to right by a thick central muscular wall called the septum
Function of the left side of the heart
The left side of the heart pumps blood which is rich in oxygen to all other parts of the body
Function of the right side of the heart
The right side of the heart pumps blood with is low in oxygen to the lungs
How does the circulatory system work?
Blood enters the left atrium
The atrium contracts and forces the blood into the left ventricle
In between the atrium & ventricles there are special structures called valves
The valves between the atria and ventricles stop blood back flow
When the ventricles fill with blood they then contract and force blood into strong muscular tubes called arteries
The parties carry the blood away from the heart
Then the veins carry the blood back to the heart
