Circulatory/respiratory system Flashcards
Cilia
The tiny hairs that clean the air
Trachea
The tube that connects carries air from the larynx to the lungs
Diaphragm
The large band of muscle that controls the size of the chest cavity located between the chest and the abdomen
Lungs
The two large light weight organs of the respiratory system
Bronchioles
The many little branches of the respiratory system
Larynx
The part of the respiratory system that is the voice box
Alveoli
The grape like clusters of air sacs in the lungs
What are the three things carried by the blood
Oxygen, nutrients, hormones
Role of the arteries
Carries blood away from the heart
Oxygen
What we breathe in
Role of the veins
Returns blood to heart
Role of the capillaries
Transports blood, nutrients, and oxygen to the cells in your organs. Also takes waste product away from your tissues. also connects the arteries and veins
Carbon dioxide
Waste product given off in the gas exchange between air and blood in the alveoli
The role of valves in blood vessels
The valves help the return of blood to the heart by opening when the blood flows toward the heart and closing when blood might flow backward
Gas exchange
Gas exchange occurs in the alveoli. It is the process of oxygen diffusing from the alveoli to the blood flow in the capillary, and carbon dioxide diffusing from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled
Role of the white blood cell
protects the body agaisnt foreign invaders and infectious deseases.
Role of platelets
Forms clots and stops or prevents bleeding
Red blood cells
Carries oxygen from lungs and delivers throughout the body, and transports waste such as carbon dioxide back to our lungs to be exhaled
Haemogloblin
Protein found in the red blood cells that carries oxygen in your body to your tissues and transport carbon dioxide. Also gives blood its red colour.
Variable that changes (growth of plant)
Dependant
Variable that is changed (amount of water)
Independant
Pharynx role
a passageway for air to enter the larynx and lungs and food and liquid to enter the esophagus.
esophagus.
The chanel that material passes through from the mouth to the stoumach
