Circulatory and Respiratory - Histology Flashcards
What type of nucleus do cardiac cells have?
single, centrally located
What structure joins cardiac cells together end to end?
intercalated disks
How big are true capillaries?
only large enough to permit passage of one erythrocyte at a time
Define small arteries.
have 8 or less layers of smooth muscle in wall
Define small arterioles.
have about 1 or 2 smooth muscle cells in wall
Explain the difference between arteries and veins.
arteries have more muscle and elastic fibers and hold their shape better than veins (more circular)
What is the smallest artery? Smallest vein?
Artery - arteriole
Vein - venule
Describe what is contained in each layer of both arteries and veins.
Tunica intima - endothelial lining
Tunica media - smooth muscle
Tunica adventitia - connective tissue
What is the widest layer of an artery? What is the widest layer of a vein?
Artery - tunica media
Vein - tunica adventitia
What is the internal elastic membrane? Where is it located?
muscle containing elastic fibers that allows for stretching and returning to shape
- located in medium arteries
What parts of the aorta are well developed vs. not well developed?
tunica media - well developed and possesses numerous elastic fibers
tunica adventitia - undeveloped and non-muscular
What makes up the tunica adventitia of the vena cava?
- muscle
- adipose
- CT
- vasa vasorum (supplies blood)
Where is the trachealis muscle located?
between the ends of the c-shaped tracheal cartilage and terminates on the perichondrium
Describe the differences between mammalian structure and avian structures.
Mammals:
1. No glands in submucosa of rabbit
2. C-shaped cartilagenous rings in trachea
Avian
1. Glands in the submucosa
2. Complete cartilagenous rings
Describe the differences between bronchi and bronchioles.
Bronchi:
1. Longitudinal folds present
2. Cartilage plates
Bronchioles:
1. No cartilage present
2. Smooth muscle present
