Circulation Flashcards
What are the two systems of circulation?
The pulmonary and systemic system.
What is the responsibility of the pulmonary system?
To deliver deoxygenated blood to the lungs, exchanging waste products for oxygen, before returning it to the heart.
What is the responsibility of the systemic system?
To transport oxygenated blood around the body.
What is the role of capillaries?
The transfer of nutrients in and out of the blood stream, permitted by their semi-permeable membrane (endothelium).
What is tissue fluid?
TIssue fluid is the liquid that surrounds the cells, allowing for transport between blood and cells.
What is hydrostatic pressure?
The pressure of the blood, created by heart contractions, designed to force blood and fluid out of miniscule gaps in capillaries.
What does hydrostatic pressure cause to move through the gaps in capillary walls?
It moves dissolved gasses and nutrients, but larger plasma and cells are unable to pass through.
What is the net movement of hydrostatic pressure in a capillary, vein, and artery?
In an artery, net movement is 2.0kPa outwards, veins has a 1.0 kPa inwards, and capillaries, have 3.5 kPa outwards.
