Blood Flashcards
Which form do red blood cells take?
Biconcave.
Which usually crucial feature do red blood cells lack?
A nucleus.
Which protein is responsible for the assistance of cells to absorb oxygen?
Haemoglobin.
Which white blood cells require the flexibility to attack, surround, and engulf targeted microorganisms?
Phagocytes.
Which white blood cells create antibodies?
Lymphocytes.
Which fragments of cells form blood clots?
Platelets.
What is the name of the straw-coloured liquid in which all blood cells are suspended, and what is its role?
Plasma, whose role is to dissolve and discard unnecessary substances.
What is the structure of an artery?
A tough fibre outer layer, thick muscle fibre wall, and a one cell thick endothelium. A substantial, though smaller lumen.
What is the structure of veins?
A similar outer layer to an artery, but with a thinner muscular wall, and a one cell thick endothelium. Veins have larger lumens, due to lower pressure.
What is the structure of a capillary?
SImply a one cell thick endothelium.
What kind of blood to arteries carry?
Generally oxygenated blood from the heart, while veins do the opposite.
What are valves?
Valves are mainly seen in veins, and they help prevent backflow in low pressure areas.
