Circulation Flashcards
What organ is responsible for pumping the fluid
The heart
What is the fluid of the transport system?
Blood
Name 5 substances that blood transports around the body
Oxygen Carbon dioxide Digested food Heat Waste
We have a —— ———. This means that blood travels though the heart twice to go round the body once.
Double circulation
Which side of the heart are the muscles thicker and stronger
Left
Name the four chambers of the heart
Left atrium
Right atrium
Left ventricle
Right ventricle
Arteries take blood
Away from to heart
Veins take blood
Towards the heart
Capillaries allow
Food and oxygen to move into tissues where it’s needed and carbon dioxide to move back into the blood
Red blood cells carry
Oxygen
White blood cells fight
Infections
Platelets help in blood
Clotting
A bad diet, stress and a lack of exercise can increase the risk of a
Heart attack
What is plasma
The liquid portion of the blood
What do red blood cells contain
Haemoglobin
Capillaries are
Narrow blood tubes
Why do veins have valves
To keep the blood flowing in one direction
How thick are a capillaries walls
One cell
Why do arteries have thick muscular walls
To withstand high pressure
What blood vessel carries food to the liver for storage
Hypatic Portal vein
What blood vessel carries blood rich in oxygen away from the lungs
Pulmonary vein
What blood vessel carries blood back to the heart
Vena cava
What blood vessel carries blood to the lungs
Pulmonary artery
What blood vessel carries blood rich in oxygen away from the heart
Aorta
What blood vessel carries blood to the kidneys
Renal artery
What does the heart do
The heart pumps blood to pick up oxygen and also pump blood containing sugar and oxygen to every cell in the body so they can carry out respiration
What keeps the blood flowing in the right direction through the heart
A series of valves keep the blood flowing in the right direction. This prevents back flow.
Why is the wall of the left ventricle thicker than the right.
The left side pumps blood around the body. The right side only needs to pump blood to the lungs. Therefore the left side needs to be stronger to pump out with a greater force.
What is a double circulation system
This means that the blood travels round the heart twice to go around the body once.
