Circulation Flashcards
Describe where the systemic and pulmonary circulation systems transport blood to.
- Systemic circulation: Left side of heart to Tissues and organs of the body Back to right side of heart
- Pulmonary circulation Right side of heart to Lungs Back to left side of heart
What does the coronary artery come from and what does it do?
Coronary arteries – branch from aortic arch, delivering oxygenated blood to the cardiac muscle.
What is the function of the aorta?
Aorta – takes oxygenated blood from heart to the respiring tissues.
What is the function of the Vena cava?
Vena Cava – takes deoxygenated blood from the respiring tissues to the heart.
What is the function of the Pulmonary artery?
Pulmonary artery – takes deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs.
Where does the hepatic artery take blood to and from?
Hepatic artery – takes oxygenated blood from aorta to the liver.
What does the hepatic portal vein carry? Where does it go?
Hepatic portal vein – takes deoxygenated, nutrient rich blood from the intestines to the liver.
Where do the left and right renal arteries supply?
The kidneys
Tell me about the layers you find in arteries and veins
• Three layers surrounding a central blood carrying canal (the lumen).
The outer layer.
Composed mainly of collagen – tough.
Smooth muscle cells may be present, particularly in veins.
Often the most prominent layer in the walls of veins.
The middle layer.
Composed mainly of smooth muscle.
Reinforced by layers of elastic tissue.
Inner lining:
A lining layer of flattened epithelial cells termed endothelium.
Sits on a basement membrane. The only layer that is present in all blood vessels
Name the type of blood vessels in order which carry the blood from the heart and back to the heart.
Heart Aorta Arteries Arterioles Capillaries Venules Veins Vena Cava Heart
How can you tell this is an artery?
Lots of elastic tissue
Small lumen
Thick walls
Which feature shows this is likely to be a vein?
Valves! The only arteries with valves are leaving the heart. (semi-lunars)
What is this?
A capillary - one cell thick
Flattened endothelium
small lumen
