Circuits Flashcards
Resistance
a quantitative property that measures how a material reduces the amount of electricity that passes through it. It is measured in ohms.
Transistor
a semi-conductive device. It is made out of silicon.
What is the total resistance of two 250 resistors in parallel? In Series?
Parallel = 125 Ohms Series = 500 Ohms
Insulators
a material that does not easily heat/electricity/light/sound to pass through it
ex: wood, rubber
conductor
a material that easily allows heat/electricity/light/sound to pass through it
ex: copper, aluminum
load
the part of the circuits that consumes energy. ex. light bulbs, TV, computer, fridge..etc.
List the steps it takes energy to get to your house.
The electricity is created (supply/source)
The electricity flows through a conductive path from the power plant to substations
at the substation, transformers reduce the power’s voltage to make it safe to transmit to small power lines
the electricity is then distributed to individual homes
How is electricity similar to water?
There is a supply, there is a current (or flow), there is more at the supply than the end point, and there is a switch to turn it on and off.
What are electrons? What makes them flow?
An electron is a negatively charged particle in an atom. Electric current makes them flow.
How do you use resistor colour codes?
each number starting with the first (on the left) is associated with a colour. Ex: 100 is brown black black
How do you calculate the resistance in series?
Add them up
How do you calculate the resistance in parallel?
1/RT = 1/R1 + 1/R2 …… etc.
What does the third input represent in the full adder?
The carry digit
