Circuit Components Flashcards
What is the name for an on off switch?
Single pole single throw (SPST)
What is the difference between SPST and SPDT?
SPDT has 2 electrical connections instead of one
What does a momentary push button look like?
look it up bc i cant afford premium
How does a relay work?
Activated indirectly by way of electric signal
Low power control device activates a high power output device
Current runs through coil in relay which generates magnetic field which pulls armature of the relay to close the switch contact for other circuit.
What are the 2 types of safety devices?
Fuses and Circuit breakers
What are the 2 types of circuit breakers?
Push button and toggle style
How does a fuse work and what is its symbol?
It is a wire connected to a circuit which breaks down if it experiences a current greater than its rating. Must be replaced after use.
Resistor with a line through it.
What is the symbol for a circuit breaker?
Upside down wine glass with balls on the rims
What are the characteristics of circuit breakers?
Can be reset
Basically an on/off switch that triggers in event of excess current flow
How does a circuit breaker work?
When the current is higher than a certain point, the magnetic field in the coil of the circuit breaker will be strong enough to pull down on the rocker arm which disconnects the circuit.
