Circ Overview Flashcards
Two components of circulatory system
Cardiovascular and lymphatic vascular systems
What makes up the cardiovascular system?
Heart and blood vessels
What composes the lymphatic system? Function?
One way system of returning EC fluid (lymph) from tissue back to cardiovascular system. Composed of lymphatic vessels and capillaries
Describe rough characteristics and function of arteries
Thick walled, muscular tubes, carry high pressure blood, branch into arterioles. Convey blood from heart to tissue
Describe rough characteristics of veins and function
Thinner walled, more fibrous than arteries, carry low pressure blood, capacitance vessel, venules
Convey blood from the tissues back to the heart
Describe rough characteristics and function of capillaries
Smallest of the blood vessels, once cell thick, allows for exchange of materials
Exchange of gasses and nutrients between blood and tissue occurs here
T or F: Veins and arteries have common embryological origin
T
What are the three layers of vein/artery?
Tunica adventitia/externa
Tunica media
Tunica intima
What is another layer for the coat of tissue around vein/arteries?
Tunica
What is the outer tunica?
Tunica adventitia/externa
What is the make-up of the tunica adventitia?
Connective tissue (collagen fibers)
Function of tunica adventitia?
Anchors blood vessel in the surrounding tissue
T or F: Large veins have smooth muscle fibers in their tunica adventitia?
T
Describe the orientation of smooth muscle in the tunica adventitia
Longitudinally along the blood vessel
What is vasa vasorum? Where is it located?
Small blood vessels serving larger blood vessels
In the tunica adventitia
Where in veins/arteries is the innervation?
Tunica adventitia
Outer to inner layers of vein/artery tunicas?
Tunica adventitia
Tunica media
Tunica intima
What are the major components of the tunica media?
Smooth muscle fibers arranged circumferentially around the lumen of the vessel
Elastic tissue is also located in this layer
Muscular arteries have a large…?
Tunica media
Inner most tunica in veins/arteries?
Tunica intima
What makes up the tunica intima?
Endothelial cells lining the lumen
Small amounts of loose connective tissue
Basement membrane/basal lamina
Arteries have what between the major tunica layers
Thick internal elastic membrane between tunica intima and tunica media (sometimes called part of tunica intima)
Sometimes has an external elastic membrane between the tunica media and tunica adventitia
Which type of vessel has a thicker vessel wall?
Artery
Which vessel has a larger lumen?
Vein has larger diameter lumen
