- The films opens with a slow, sweeping shot of long duration which establishes and romantices the grandeur of the natural world. It is untouched by civilisation.
- However close ups of the mud-covered bodies who appear make the humans appear monstrous, threatening and less humane.
- Slow and voyeuristic as ‘Bod’ lies in hunt for his prey, it is followed by quick series of shot of the killing.
- There is an immediate barrier - we don’t have initial alignment with these characters who will infect become our protagonists.

- The absence of music announces it to be an idependant film .
- The natrualsitc song makes this quite shocking, there is no sound to soften or glamorise the act, it connotes that death is part of life.

- The dark red blood, the cries of attack and pain, the ritual of eating the heart are all incredibly brutal and animalistic.
- which is very different modern, western, civilised world of the typical spectator. - Ross is introducing to the spectator into a socialist world which the capitalist spectator is not familiar with.
- According to `Stuart Hall, films are encoded with directors oppositional reading of the film messages.
