Cinematography Flashcards
Cinematography
the arts and science of recording movements
Framing
what is in your frame, and what’s not in your frame (frame is your canvas)
Composition
the way you put things in your frame, how movement goes through your frame (can be still or dynamic)
Mise En Scene
captures everything that can go into a shot/scene (the action in a shot, the lighting, the composition, the blocking, the overall aesthetic and weight, etc etc etc)
One Point Perspective
everything drives your eye to the middle of the frame
Breaking the fourth wall
can include or exclude the audience in your story
Rule of thirds
placing your subject on the thirds as a stylistic choice
Head Room
how much room you have over someone’s head, usually you don’t cut people’s head off, and you don’t give them too much room
Lead Room
he space out front/behind of a character when walking in profile
Shot
when you press record, and then you press stop. One unit of recording on video
Sequence
when you put a whole series of shots together, not always considered a scene, but also sequence and scene often go together
Scene
typically shot in one location, a series of shots in one location
Zoom
need a zoom lens (variable lens) to move in on the frame
Montage
throwing a whole bunch of shots to tell a story in quick secession
depth of feild
depends on what you want to show the audience, what amount of your frame is in focus
