Denonative
the direct, explicit meaning of a word or image;the thing itself
Connotative
an idea associated with a word or image in addition to its explicit meaning
How is cinematography significant?
Refers to visual aspects of a film’s language(e.g Camera/Lens)
Camera shots and movement gives the viewer an indication of emotion and hints the audience what is about to happen
Frame
Single image and the smallest unit of film construction
scene
series of related shots
sequence
series of scenes telling a major part of an entire story
establishing
a shot used to near the beginning of a scene to establish the relationship of details to be shown
master
a shot that covers an entire piece of dramatic action
cutaway
a shot usually close up of some detail used to break up a matching action sequence
Cut in
a shot to cut into a scene usually a close up to show detail
shot
single continuation of recording made by the camera
Framing
refers to the way a shot is composed and the manner in which subjects and objects are surrounded by the perimeter of the film image
reframing
refers to the short panning of tilting movements of the camera to adjust to the characters movement to keep them centered
Tight framing
composition is so carefully balanced and harmonised that the people photographed have little or or no freedom of movement
loose framing
composition is looser and freer within the confines of the frame so that the people photographed have considerable freedom of movement
