Ciliated Columnar Epithelium Flashcards
How are ciliated columnar epithelium different from simple columnar epithelium?
Unlike simple columnar epithelium, ciliated columnar epithelium possess fine hair-like outgrowths on their free surfaces
What are the fine hair-like outgrowths possessed by ciliated epithelium called?
Cilia
What do cilia do?
Cilia are capable of rapid, rhythmic, wavelike beatings in a certain direction
What does the movement of cilia do?
The movement of the cilia in a certain direction causes the mucus, which is secreted by the goblet cells, to move (flow or stream) in that direction
Where is ciliated epithelium found?
Ciliated epithelium is usually found in:
- air passages like the nose
- uterus and Fallopian tubes
(movement of cilia moves the ovum to the uterus)
