CI.3 Flashcards
Measuring rates of reactions
1
Q
What does the rate of a reaction mean?
A
The rate at which reactants are converted into products.
2
Q
Why is it useful to know the rate of a reaction?
A
So you can make changes to concentrations in order to increase rate, or it can tell you about the reaction mechanism.
3
Q
What are five ways you can measure the rate of a reaction?
A
- Measuring volumes of gases evolved.
- Measuring mass changes.
- pH measurement.
- Colorimetry.
- Chemical analysis including titration.
4
Q
What does chemical analysis of a reaction involve that differs from other means of measuring rate?
A
It involves taking small samples of the mixture at regular intervals and stopping the reaction in the sample before analysis by a process known as quenching.
