The condemned men were enclosed in prison; the death sentence was fixed for them, torture was exacted from the wretched parents of the ships’ captains; they were prevented from approaching their sons, prevented from bringing food and clothing to them. Those fathers whom you see laying in the doorway, those wretched mothers spent all night at the entrance to the prison, cut off from the very last sight of their children, these mothers asked for nothing except that they might be allowed to catch in their mouths the last breath of their sons
