Behold, however, while Cleomenes was drunk and the rest were starving, it was suddenly announced that a pirates’ ship was in the harbour of Odyssea; for that’s how the place was called; meanwhile our fleet was in the port of Pachynum. Cleomenes indeed, because it was a land garrison not in fact but in name, hoped that he could make up the numbers of rowers and sailors with those soldiers whom he had withdrawn from that place. That very greedy fellow’s method was found to be the same in the cast of the garrisons as it had been in the fleets; for those left were very few, the rest had been exempt
