Gallstones
Ethanol
Trauma/tumour
Steroids

What are the genetic causes of pancreatitis?
A
- PRSS1 - AD
- CF(TR) - AR
- SPINK1
- Pancreas divisum (parts of the pancreas don’t join together properly in utero)

What are the acute complications of pancreatitis?
A
- Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (like sepsis)
- Respiratory failure and death

What are the chronic complications of pancreatitis? (7)
A
- Splenic and portal vein thrombosis
- Psuedocysts
- Biliary obstruction (resolve with stent by EUS)
- Type 3 diabetes (high risk of hypos)
- Duodenal stricture (resolve with stent)
- Ductal stricture (painful)
- Malignancy - difficult to differentiate on imaging

How are psuedocysts managed?
A
Often resolve after 6 weeks but sometimes require drainage into the stomach by axios stent with EUS

How is chronic pancreatitis managed?
A
- MDT approach
- Creon + PPI
- Whipple’s resection
- Pancreatectomy in rare cases
