Chronic Pain Flashcards
What type of pain is this?
d/t activation of nociceptors
- inflammation
- mechincal irritant
- Injury
Examples: ankle sprain, osteoarthrtis, Rheumatoid arthritis
Nociceptive
Pain = injury
What type of pain is this?
Due to lesion or disease of the somatosensory system
Examples: diabetic neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, numbness and tingling
Neuropathic
What type of pain is this?
Due to disturbances in central or peripheral processing
- enahnced excitability
- reduced inhibition
Examples: fibromyalgia, temporomandibular disorders, non-specific low back pain
Nociplastic
What type of pain is this?
- pain localized to area of injury
- clear mechanical nature to aggravting and easing factors
- usually intermittent or sharp w/ movement provcation and more constant dull ache at rest
- abseence of dysethsia, night pain, buring/electic shocks, or antalgic patterns
Nociceptive
What type of pain is this?
- Pain referred in dermatomal or cutaneous distribution
- h/o nerve injury
- Provocation w/ mechanical/movement tests (i.e. neurodynamic tests)
Peripheral Neuropathic
What type of pain is this?
- unpredictable pattern of pain provocatio in response to non-specific aggravating/easing facotrs
- pain disproportionate to the nature and extenet of the injury
- strong association w/ maladaptive psychosocial factors
- Diffuse/non-anatomic areas of pain/tenderness of palpation
Nociplastic (central)
Responding to nonpainful stimulus as pain
Allodynia
More pain than expected to a painful stimulus
Hyperalgesia
What are the 5 physical signs of non-organic LBP?
- Tenderness
- Simulation
- Distraction
- Regional
- Overreaction
