- Alcohol
- NAFLD
- Viral - Hep B, Hep C
- Autoimmune - PBC, PSC, autoimmune hepatitis
- Other metabolic - haemochromatosis, Wilson’s, alpha 1 antitrypsin
- Drugs - methotrexate, amiodarone

Consequences
A
- Portal hypertension –> varices, ascites, hypersplenism
- Liver dysfunction - coagulopathy, encephalopathy, jaundice, hypoalbuminaemia
- HCC

Causes of decompensation
A
Infection (incl. SBP), hypokalaemia, GI bleed, sedation, constipation, HCC

Hepatic encephalopathy grades
A
- insomnia/reversal of day-night sleep pattern
- lethargy/disorientation
- confusion/somnolence
- coma

Childs-Pugh score
A
For severity and prognosis
Made up of bilirubin,ascites, encephalopathy, PT, albumin
Grade C - 33% 1 year mortality

Management of cirrhosis
A
- Treat underlying liver disease - abstinence, immunosuppression,
- Prevent liver damage - vaccines
- 6 monthly US - HCC, endoscopy for varices
