What is chronic kidney disease?
A chronic decline in kidney function, lasting for a minimum of 3 months. it is irreversible, progressive and permanent.
What are the main causes of chronic kidney disease?
Hypertension + diabetes mellitus.
what are the signs and symptoms of CKD?
its mostly ASYMPTOMATIC - but can have pruritus, oedema, muscle cramps, pallor, hypertension.
When should eGFR be tested?
1 first then another after 3 months.
What is accelerated CKD?
When GFR falls more than 15mls/min in one year.
What are the two staging scorers?
G - for glomerular filtration rate
A - for creatinine : albumin ratio
What GFR is needed for a diagnosis of CKD?
GFR of <60mls/min, or proteinuria.
What GFR signifies end stage kidney disease?
GFR of <15mls.
What are the main complications?
Osteoporosis, osteomalacia, Osteosclerosis, normocytic anaemia (less erythropoietin, less RBCs, normal size), microcytic anaemia (not enough iron)
what is a common complication of CKD and Ace inhibitors?
Hyperkalaemia
