chronic kidney disease/end stage Flashcards
1
Q
chronic kidney dz?
A
decline in GFR over months to years
>70% due to DM and HTN
2
Q
s/s of CKD?
A
HYPERTENSION asymptomatic in early stages but progressive decline in gfr cognitive decline over time drug toxicity hypoglycemia (dont clear insulin)
3
Q
diag criteria of CKD
A
- document elevation in serum crea over >3mo
- persistent proteinuria or abnormal renal imaging
4
Q
tx of CKD
A
CONTROL BP tx of underlying cause tx of comorbities refer stg 3-5 avoid nephrotoxic drugs
5
Q
uremic syndrome?
A
uremia = build up of nitrogenous wastes (END ORGAN DAMAGE)
-common in ESRD w/ GFR<10
6
Q
end stage renal dz?
A
- stage 5 of CKD
- GFR declines to 5-10mL/min/1.73m2
- most pts dont get here bc they die earlier
7
Q
ESRD s/s
A
- uremia
- general: fatigue, n/v, cognitive issues
- decline in kidney func over time
- HTN
- fluid retention
8
Q
ESRD lab results
A
BROAD WAXY CASTS
GFR<10
elevated BUN/creat
9
Q
ESRD tx?
A
renal replacement therapy to sustain life:
- hemodialysis
- peritoneal dialysis
- kidney transplant
