Chronic Inflammation Flashcards
1
Q
what is chronic inflammation
A
inflammation which can last for several months/years
2
Q
types of cells involved in chronic inflammation
A
macrophages
lymphocytes
plasma cells
fibro blasts
3
Q
major causes chronic inflammation
A
- non-degradable pathogens
- infection
- persistent foreign bodies (e.g. hair/nail)
- overactive immune system reactions
- failure to eliminate what was causing acute inflammation
4
Q
effects of chronic inflammation
A
- tissue/cell destruction
- thickening and scarring of connective tissue
5
Q
adverse effects of tissue scarring
A
- nerve pain/ numbness
- sweat glands and hair follicles do not grow back
- single direction fibres rather than cross linked, an inferior alignment
6
Q
factors involved in promoting healing and repair
A
- cleanliness
- apposition of edges (no haematoma)
- good nutrition
- metabolic stability and normality
- normal inflammatory and coagulation mechanisms
7
Q
angiogenesis
A
process by which new blood vessels are formed from old blood vessels
8
Q
factors that impair healing and repair
A
- dirty
- gaping wound
- large haematoma
- poor nourishment
- lots of granulation (healing by secondary intention)
- abnormal carbohydrate metabolism
- diabetes
- inhibition of angiogenesis
