Chronic Complications of Diabetes Flashcards
Which insulin is used in the management of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)?
Regular insulin, and it is also the only insulin to be administered intravenously.
The most common cause of death in people with diabetes is
coronary artery disease, accounting for up to 60% of all cases and mortality
Treatment of HHS?
Treatment includes rapid correction of fluid and electrolyte imbalances, lowering blood glucose levels with insulin, and treating the underlying conditions, such as infection
The major difference between symptoms of HHS and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA):
Is the presence of abnormal ketones, which exist in DKA but not HHS. Therefore, fruity breath, plasma ketones, urine ketones, and a decreased pH exist with DKA, but not with HHS. HHS is a life threatening emergency and has a higher mortality rate than DKA. The most common precipitating factor is infection.
The lowest fasting plasma glucose level suggestive of a diagnosis of DM is:
126 mg/dL
