What is Chron’s disease?
Chronic inflammation of the distal ileum and colon but may occur in any part of the GI tract besides the rectum.
What two age groups have a higher risk of Chrons Disease?
15 - 30 year olds
60 - 70 year olds
What are the causes of Chrons?
- Unknown But factors such as: Genetic, microbial, immunologic environmental dietary vascular psychosocial smoking oral contraceptives NSAIDs could add to the development of Chrons
How does tissue injury develop in Chrons?
Chronic inflammation from T-cell activation
What effect does inflammation have on the bowels?
Thickens the bowel wall and narrows the lumen.
As Crohn disease progresses, it is complicated by obstruction or deep ulceration leading to fistulization, abscess formation, adhesions, and malabsorption.
What initially causes bowel obstruction in Chrons ?
Caused initially by significant oedema of the mucosa and associated spasm of the bowel.
What happens when there is prolonged bowel obstruction?
fibrotic scarring
luminal narrowing
stricture formation
What are the two most common signs of Chrons?
Abdominal pain and diarrhoea
What are some other signs and Chrons?
Fever Weight loss, anorexia Nausea, vomiting Malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies Generalized fatigability Bone loss Psychological Factors Growth failure in adolescent patients
