Chromotography Flashcards
What is a formulation?
A complex mixture designed as a a useful product
How is the rf value calculated?
Distance moved by spot / distance moved by solvent
What is chromatography?
A process to separate mixtures
What is the stationary phase in chromatography?
Paper
What is the mobile phase in chromatography?
Solvent
What are pure substances?
Substance made of a single element or compound
How can chromatography show the difference between pure and impure substances?
Pure ones will not separate into a number of spots
How can pure substances be distinguished from impure ones?
By their melting and boiling points
Examples of formulations
Fuels, paint, cleaning agents, medicine, fertiliser
Why should we use pencil for our chromatography line?
Ink will dissolve into the substance
Why should the solvent be below the start line?
To make sure solvent doesn’t wash away any spots
What are the stages of chromatography.
Draw start line with pencil
Place colouring on marks it’s capillary tubes
Tape paper onto glass rod and place in beaker
Leave so substance travels up paper
Use ruler to measure distance from start line
Calculate rf value
Which substance travels the furthest?
The soluble one
What phase is less soluble spots attracted to?
Stationary phase
What phase are soluble spots attracted to?
Mobile phase
