Chromotography Flashcards
What does chromatography mean
Chromatography is a separating technique where mixtures of colour and non colour are seperated soluble in the solvent
Explain the chromatography practical (6)
1)Draw the start line with pencil on a paper
2)Using a capillary tube add the 4 food dye on the paper making sure that they are 2 cm away from each other and no on the edge of the paper
3)Pour water (solvent) in the beaker making sure it is shallow being lower then the dots
4)Attach paper on glass rod and put it in the beaker
5) Leave the paper in the beaker letting the pigment travel up the paper
6)After remove the paper and draw the solvent front with pencil
7)measure the distance of the solvent front and the pigment
Formula for chromatography
Rf = pigment distance travel ÷ distance of solvent
What is the stationary phase
When there is no movement in the chromatography paper
What is the mobile phase
When the pigment dissolve and travels up the paper
A student does a chromatography practical and there was error
states 2 things the student did wrong
Drew start line with ink ( the ink would also travel up)
Solvent above the pigments ( pigment get washed off)
