chromatology Flashcards
what is chromatology?
the physical separation of a mixture into its individual components.
what are the different types of chromatology and what they are used for?
liquid- An atom or molecule that has lost or gained a valence electron or electrons.
thin layer -Uses thin plastic or glass trays to identify the composition of pigments, chemicals, and other unknown substances
gas - Used to determine the chemical composition of unknown substances, such as the different compounds in petrol shown by each separate peak in the graph below.
paper -Can be used to separate the components of inks, dyes, plant compounds (chlorophyll), make-up, and many other substances
what is a mixture?
Two or more substances that are mixed together, but not chemically combined.
what is a compound?
Two or more elements that are chemically combined
what are ions?
An atom or molecule that has lost or gained a valence electron or electrons.
