Chromatography Flashcards
Stationary phase of TLC?
Thin layer of solid coated on an inert
Mobile phase of TLC?
A liquid solvent which moves up vertically up the TLC plate
Basis of separation of TLC?
The distance a component moves up the plate depends on how strongly it is adsorbed onto stationary phase
Weaker adsorption the further it will move
Stationary phase of GC?
High boiling point liquid coated on the inside of a column
Mobile phase of GC?
An inert gas
What is retention time? GC
Time for a component to pass from the column inlet to the detector, measured from zero to the centre of the peak
Basis of separation of GC?
The speed of a component moves through the column depends on how soluble it is in the stationary phase
More soluble the longer the retention time
What is the peak area?
Area of each peak is proportional to the amount of that substance in the sample
