chromatography Flashcards
how does the ink travel up the chromatography paper?
by capillary action
what is the mobile phase?
the solvent which is used to distinguish the colours in an impure substance in chromatography
what is the stationary phase?
the chromatography paper itself
what is the retention factor used for and how?
finding out unknown substances as it can be compared with other Rf substances (reference values)
what is the equation for retention factor?
distance moved by solvent
what will pure substances produce on the chromatography paper?
one dot of a single colour
what will happen to substances which are more soluble?
they will travel further up the page because they spend more time on the mobile phase and thus are carried further up the paper than less soluble components
