Life In Neolithic Ireland
What tools and weapons did they use?
As well as using flint the Neolithic people used porcellanite, a tougher and heavier stone. It made very good axe-heads, which were used to cut down trees to clear the forests for farming
Clothes
Most people used wool from sheep for making clothes. People discovered how to spin and weave cloth. Dyes were made from berries and plants. We know that Neolithic people wore jewellery because necklaces, made from bone, and stone pendants were found at Lough Gur.
Pottery
Neolithic farmers were the first people to make pottery from clay. To make a bowl, they took a lump of wet clay and moulded it into the shape of a pot with their fists, then left them to dry and baked them in a fire. They decorated them with patterns by pressing sticks or their fingernails.
Farming
Neolithic farmers built stone walls to make fences around their fields. By doing this, farmers could keep their sheep and cattle safe from attacks by wild animals, and wandering off. Cattle provided them with milk and meat, sheep with wool and meat. Farmers also grew crops such as wheat, oat and barley. A quern stone was used to grind grain into flour for bread.
Court cairns
Court cairns are made of upright stones covered over with earth and stones. They were used for religious ceremonies before a burial took place.
Dolmen
To make a dolmen two or three large stones are put standing upright, a very large stone called a capstone is placed on top.
Passage tombs
From the outside the passage tombs look like a hill or circular mound of earth. Inside there is a long passage leading to a chamber.
A fulacht fiadh
A pit where they lit and cooked their meat
A cist grave
A cist was a pit in the ground lined with stone slabs where the dead lay cremated or buried
Wedge tombs
Wedge tombs were built with large, flat stones. The front tomb is wider and higher than the back. People were also buried and cremated there.
Stone circles
These are tall upright stones arranged in circles or rows. Some of them have human remains buried within them.
Clonmacnoise
Clonmacnoise was set up by St.Ciarán in AD 545 and is on the Shannon.
Manuscripts
Manuscripts are books that had to be copied by hand. The manuscripts were made by scribes who worked in a scriptorium. The scribes wrote on vellum or parchment. For pens they used quills dipped in ink made from plants and powdered rocks
How do we know about the romans
We know about the romans because archaeologists have dug up many places where the Romans lived. And the Romans wrote many stories, histories, plays and other books, so it is easy for us to find out how they thought and felt.
