Christina Moral Principle Flashcards
What is propositional knowledge/ faith?
Knowing and accepting something with a ‘truth value’.
What is non-propositional knowledge/ faith?
Knowledge/ faith that is increased by experience and the process of experiencing. Faith of a personal encounter; a sense of the divine.
What are Richard B. Hays concerns with interpretation?
Formed in questions to guide hermeneutics.
- How accurate is the account? Poor translation?
- Is a range of texts being used to justify a point? Is an unusual text being isolated?
- Is there a particular selection of texts that becomes common? Bible within a bible?
- Is a particular focal image being perpetuated? Jesus the loving son, Jesus the angry rebel?
How does a propositional approach to the Bible affect interpretation? How does it differ with a non-propositional approach?
The words of the Bible become fixed moral principles with fixed definitions. Less personal and experimental approach.
An example of the authority of Scripture.
2 Peter.
Jeremiah 1: 9
2 Thessalonians
“No prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things”
“I have put my words in your mouth”
“Stand firm and gold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter”
What is Richard B Hays defence for the Bible being used in conjunction with Church tradition?
“The interpretation of Scripture can never occur in a vacuum”
It is always “using the light of reason and experience”.
An example of the Church viewing tradition equal to the Bible?
Vatican II, ‘Dei Verbum’
“Sacred tradition and sacred scripture form one scared deposit of the word of god”
How does Neil Messer describes Church tradition?
“A shared understanding within the Christina community about the kind of community it is”
What is Richard B Hays approach to the use of reason?
Reason is important, and influenced by our culture.
“Reason itself is always culturally influenced”
