Christians and Genetic Engineering: Against Flashcards
What are four points?
Playing God
The Sanctity of Life/Life begins at Conception (Embryo Research)
Interfering with God’s plan
Imago Dei
Playing God
“For it was you who created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb… “ (Psalm 139)
It is a sin to play God
Only heaven is perfect — not Earth
Don’t interfere with God’s will
God created the genetic make up of each human at the moment of conception
The Sanctity of Life/Life begins at Conception (Embryo Research)
Discarding embryo is murder, destroying life
God made us as individuals
Stem cell research involves discarding human embryos
This could be regarded as murder: “You shall not murder.” (Exodus 20)
For Roman Catholics life begins at conception
They would not support the 14-Day time limit set by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority for Genetic Research
Interfering with God’s plan
Ecclesiastes 7:13: “Consider God’s handiwork; who can straighten what He has made crooked?”
Only God can create life and humans
People are made in the image of God, not how a scientist wants them
Imago Dei
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27)
Scientist don’t need to engineer humans as God made us how he wants
Don’t interfere with God’s will
It is wrong to try and make the world perfect as only Heaven is perfect - life is preparation for Heaven and we should not try to make Heaven on Earth
