Getting Involved in Democratic and Electoral Processes: For Flashcards
What are four points?
People were prepared to die for the vote and voting equality
Your vote effects the government in power
By voting you are sharing your voice
Your life is going to be affected by who is in power
People were prepared to die for the vote and voting equality
Emmeline Pankhurst, who founded the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), was a Suffragette who died in 1913 fighting for the vote for women
Voting is so important that people gave their lives for the vote so you should honour them and vote because you are fortunate to have it when they didn’t - exercise your right to vote as many do not have this privilege
(OR did they fight for the right to choose to vote - other side)
Your vote effects the local government in power
It gives you more control over local issues that affect you on a day to day basis
You have the chance to be involved in social change
If you don’t like what the local government has done or is doing, you have the opportunity to change this by voting for a different party at the next election
By voting you are sharing your voice
If nobody voted then democracy would be pointless
You are influencing the way the country is run
You should try and affect your country as you see fit
If you don’t vote then it’s easier for extremist parties to get in as they would have less competition
Your life is going to be affected by who is in power
The national government sets our taxes, chooses how the money is spent, how much people receive in benefits, what is going to be taught in schools
The policies and laws made by the government will rule our lives so you should vote for the party that best represents what you want
