Q

How does the Passover compare with the Last Supper?

A

Q

Why was the Last Supper significant to Mark?

A
  • Mark wanted to stress the significance of the broken bread - representing Jesus body broken on the cross.
  • Mark wanted to stress the significance of the wine - representing Jesus blood shed on the cross.
  • Mark wrote his gospel to Christians who were suffering persecution and he wanted them to understand that Jesus had suffered too and that he had come to save them from the horror of sin.
  • Mark links the event clearly with the Passover to show that Jesus was the Passover Lamb sacrificed to free God’s chosen people.

Q

What does Gethsemane reveal about Jesus?

A
  • Jesus was showing his true humanity at this point - he was afraid and worried about the events that He knew would begin soon - and He was making sure that there was no other way to save people.
  • Jesus recognised that His sacrifice on the cross was the only way and he accepted God’s will.
  • He used the word ‘Abba’ when referring to God - this is Hebrew word for father which shows a real closeness.

Q

What problems does the story in Gethsemane raise for Christian today?

A
  • Some people think that Jesus should not have had to ask God anything since Jesus himself was God.
  • Why did Jesus ask to get ‘out of it?’ Did He not trust God?
  • If Jesus knew He was going to be resurrected, why was he worried about dying?

Q

Most people see Judas’ act in Gethsemane as the ultimate betrayal but some say he had good reason to betry Jesus. What reasons would Judas have?

A
  • He was only fulfilling his destiny - so he had no choice
  • He was disillusioned with Jesus - recognising that Jesus was not going to become the leader Judas hoped for
  • Judas ‘helped’ Jesus to fulfil his ministry of dying to save humanity.

Q

Why is Jesus’ trial before the High Priest significant for Christians today?

A
  • The trial was unusual and most people today would say that justice was not done - Jesus was an inocent man
  • Today Christians would be very keen to see that Justice is done in the world and that people cannot just be influenced by their own bias or personal opinion.

Q

Why is the trial before Pontius Pilate significant for Christians today?

A
  • In the past some Christians blamed the Jews for Jesus’ death and this led to persecution of Jewish people.
  • However, today Christians realise that Jesus taught that you should ‘love you neighbour’ and that it is wrong the treat people differently.
  • Christians see the trials as fulfilling God’s plan.

Q

Why is the burial of Jesus important for Christians today?

A
  • Even today people still argue that Jesus did not really die - this story shows that Jesus did in fact die - Roman soldiers who took down the body would not have made any mistake on this point.

Q

Paul, a Jewish convert to Christianity, summed up the importance of the resurrection by saying what?

A

If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.
