Council of Trent

A

The biggest reform movement in the history of the Catholic
Church. This is known as the Catholic Counter-Reformation. The Council of Trent laid down strict
rules for the lives of the clergy. Pope Paul III and his successors hoped that the Protestants would
come back to the Catholic Church which was now reforming itself.

The COUNCIL OF TRENT issued decrees to make church teachings abundantly clear, especially:
 That the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) is the head of the whole Catholic Church
 That we are saved by our faith and by receiving sacraments and doing charitable works
 That there are seven (7) Sacraments  sacraments are “visible signs of God’s grace”
 That indulgences were forbidden and sainthood was to be limited.
 That Priests and bishops had to become more involved with the people they were trying to
save.

The first Holy Week, by the plan of God, was the most important week in the life of Jesus Christ. This Holy Week, likewise, should be the most important week in the entire year for each one of us. Martin Luther

A

a very pious monk, opposed the selling
of indulgences and openly rebelled against the claims of authority by the
Pope. He demanded reform. He posted his Ninety-Five Theses on the door
of the Cathedral, demanding the Catholic Church change its
practices. Luther alleged that:

Jesus is the only head of the church not the Pope

No one can dictate who can go to heaven

only personal faith can save us

Only the bible is the true teaching of God

receiving sacraments, blessings, indulgences, praying for the dead, celebrating feasts (i.e.
Christmas, Easter), and going to church cannot save people from their sins.

rituals, statues, rosaries, venerating Mary, praying to
saints are idolatry and superstition. They lead to Hell!
