Two divisions of liturgical worship:
- Eucharist
- Service of the Word
What does the Eucharist service focus on?
It focuses on the celebration of Jesus’ suffering
What does the Eucharist involve? (3)
- Consubstantiation/ Transubstantiation
- Short Sermon
- Hymns
What does the Service of the Word involve? (3)
- No Eucharist
- Longer sermon
- Bible readings
What is involved in an Anglican (Methodist) service?
- Consubstantiation
- Book of Common Prayer
- Reading of the Creed and Gospel
- Hymns
What is involved in a Catholic service?
- Service from a missal book
- Transubstantiation
What are the features of a Quaker service?
- An hour long
- Silence
- 2 Quakers shake hands, followed by everyone else
What is involved in an Orthodox service?
- 2 parts: Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of Faithful
- Emphasis of Holy Spirit
What does the Liturgy of the Word involve?
Hymns and prayers
What is the Liturgy of Faithful?
The part of the service where only baptised can participate
Churches that do non-liturgical worship:
- Non-conformist Churches eg. Baptists & Methodists
What is the purpose of non-liturgical services?
To reinforce the importance of the Bible
