What is a theodicy?
An argument which tries to show that God exists despite evil and suffering
What is Augustine’s theodicy?
All humans were created perfect and given free will. He places the responsibility of evil on humans because with our free will we choose to sin.
What is Irenaeus’ theodicy?
Evil and suffering exist in the world because it is the best way for humans to develop.
What does the Nicene Creed show?
- One god exists in 3 persons
- god the father is the creator
- Jesus saved us from sin
- god the Holy Spirit gave life to all things
Evangelical Christian’s believe…
When you die you stay in the grave until the end of time.
True Christian’s go to heaven, everyone else hell.
Protestant Christian’s believe…
When you die you are not resurrected, your soul goes straight to heaven.
Many do not believe in hell.
Roman Catholics believe…
When you die, souls of very good people go to heaven, others go to purgatory (they pay for their sins).
On the last day all will be judged by god.
What happened in the Rich Man and Lazarus story?
About a rich and a poor man. Rich man ignored begging poor man. When they both died, poor man was sent to heaven and rich man sent to hell. Teaches that if you help others you go to heaven, if you don’t you will go to hell.
What happens in the parable of the Sheep and the Goats story?
Jesus is telling people about judgement with this story. Jesus uses sheep and goats to make people imagine god separating bad from good people. Our actions affect what happens to us after death. (Salvation by merit)
Christian beliefs about heaven?
For those who lived a good life. Some believe it is a physical place, some believe it is a spiritual existence
Christian beliefs about hell?
Punishment for those rejected by god.
What is purgatory?
A place where people who have sinned are purified in a cleansing fire, afterwards they are accepted into Heaven.
What is salvation by grace?
God loves everyone unconditionally regardless if they have obeyed him.
What is salvation by merit?
When you do something good, you receive a reward. Eg if you live a good life you will go to heaven.
When did Jesus die?
Around 30 AD
where did Jesus die?
Golgotha, jerusalem
What is atonement?
Making up for something wrong that someone has done, Jesus’ death atoned for our sins.
Over how many days did Jesus appear to the apostles after his resurrection?
40 days
What is parousia?
The belief that Jesus will return to earth after his ascension to Heaven (the second coming)
